Check your laptop's specs sheet or look for a DisplayPort or Thunderbolt icon near the port. If it's missing, that USB-C port is data and charge only. Your options are using a different port on the laptop (HDMI or DisplayPort) or getting a DisplayLink adapter that outputs video over standard USB data.

Why does my IPS monitor look different from my laptop screen?

Different panels render colors differently by default. Your laptop might use a TN or IPS panel with a different color gamut than your external IPS monitor. Calibrate both displays using the same color profile or a hardware calibration tool to bring them closer together.

Even then, some variation between different panel types is normal.

Can I close my laptop lid and use only the IPS monitor?

Yes. In Windows, go to Power Options and choose "Do nothing" when the lid is closed while plugged in. On a Mac, you need an external keyboard and mouse connected for clamshell mode to work.

Both let you use the IPS monitor as your sole display with the laptop closed.
